Getting Started?

When our closets are full of items that we no longer wear it is time to consider consiging. For whatever reason those closets are full whether we lost weight or bought on sale a little too often, or maybe we switched from a professional working environment to a casual one. Your quality gently-used items can be turned into extra cash, so now is the time to take inventory then head straight to your local consignment shop.

Once you have gathered your items and separated them by season and style, look through them carefully from a buyer's perspective and consider consigning those items that are in good shape, stain-free and not too worn, and that you believe might be just as appealing to someone else, as they once were to you.

The next BIG step is to grab the phone book and check the business pages for listings under resale, secondhand, clothes or consignment. Take the time to make a list of all the stores in your area and then start the trek to turning those items into cash.

Try visiting a few shops as a buyer, paying close attention to the variety of items and their prices. Although your profit is dependent on the final selling price, if the price seem a little inflated, you may end up with items that don't sell and we do not want that! Get a clear idea about what type of items they are interested in consigning, then make an appointment at the consignment shops that you believe may be interested in your items.

Have a consignment shops explain the consignment store's policy. Typically consigned clothes are kept for a period of 30 to 60 days. Unsold items are usually returned to you depending on that consignment shop's terms, while consignment shops will earn you a portion of the selling price you are still earning money from items that were just sitting in the closet.

It is a good practice to keep a personal record of what you consign, and if you don't hear from the consignment shop first, it is a good practice to call once a week before your selling period ends. Depending on the consignment shop's policy, you may receive cash, credit or a check. Always remember to keep your settlement copies for your records!
